Hereford Rotarians feed
African Street Children - Factfile

Money, through financial aid, supporting the work done by Hillsbrow RC, Johannesburg working within the New Nations School, Johannesburg, delivering humanitarian projects that are targeted on pupils attending this school. As will be seen from the document links, this school caters for children that are the most disadvantaged in the city - often street-children.

The mid-day meal they receive via Rotary volunteers will often be the only hot food they receive that day and is conditional on the children attending school and therefore receiving Education. Most of these children have no obvious families and no visible means of support.

They are destitute.

The main aims of the project, which is being supported by Hereford Wye Valley RC are threefold…

• Give humanitarian aid to extremely disadvantaged children from the Hillbrow and Berea areas of Johannesburg.

• Enhance education opportunities and literary training for children attending the New Nation School, Johannesburg, South Africa.

• Supply education and regular mid-day meals for children attending the New Nation School, Johannesburg, South Africa. Health and education are a vital part of life for children attending this school.

Coming from the most disadvantaged area of the city of Johannesburg, the pupils would get neither without the intervention of voluntary organizations such as Rotary.

Nutrition and Education are conditional upon each other. Regular Nutrition will improve the children’s health and enable them to escape from a life on the streets or rubbish tips in search of food scraps – thus providing the opportunity to attend school.

Education is the key to escaping the poverty trap – This project will provide that opportunity for the poorest children to get a foot on the ladder to an improved way of life – not just for them but their families.

The project is being delivered ‘on the ground’ by members of the Hillbrow Rotary Club, Johannesburg on behalf of Hereford Wye Valley Rotary Club and is part of their on-going support for this vital requirement and the United Sisterhood of Johannesburg.
